Kosmas is a sea merchant and beloved younger son of a well-to-do family from distant Byzantium. Kosmas has learned the languages and customs of the major ports of the Mediterranean and northward to the British Isles where, captaining his first solo trade expedition, his fortunes have failed and left him stranded. His pragmatism sustains him daily, favoring shrewd diplomacy over his faith, his winning smile backed by his quarterstaff. With only his fraying finery and Agnellus, his young scribe in tow, Kosmas ingratiates himself with the local lords, aiming to one day rebuild his fortune and set sail for home.
